As many as 28 percent of the Nevada Republican 2008 Caucus attendees from Clark County believe that the Nevada Republican Party does not have the organization or the resources to defeat the 2012 Democratic Party machine that was built by Harry Reid and Barack Obama over the last four years. Almost a third of the respondents indicated they would penalize Rand Paul’s future political plans if his father, Ron Paul, bolted the GOP and made an attempt to run as an independent candidate for president. These were the findings of a poll commissioned by GoVote.com and conducted by September Inc.
“Over the last 25 years in politics I have always found that there are powerful undercurrents that shape the political landscape in a presidential election year,” explains Tim Mooney, president of GoVote.com.
“That’s why we wanted to know, besides the basic ‘horse race’ questions, what the hard base of the party thought about some very determinate issues that affect politics in months to come.”
Mooney is quick to point out that the polling universe was made up of 2008 GOP caucus attendees, and that there will be many new people attending the Nevada GOP Presidential Caucuses on February 4th. 64 percent of respondents said that they were planning on attending the 2012 caucuses.

“It’s clear from those that have been activists, that at least a third of them are pessimistic about the ability of the Nevada GOP to mount a strong challenge against the Obama machine in Nevada. They are also willing to punish Rand Paul if his father jumps ship in this election cycle. History has always shown us that where you have a strong party machine, and party discipline, you have great success in your state’s presidential results.”
Mooney thinks that the results of the poll are mirrored in polling he has seen in other parts of the country, with 81 percent believing that the country is on the wrong track.
He also sees Nevada’s libertarian streak in the GOP reflected by a not surprising choice of Mitt Romney as the leading first pick of 2008 caucus attendees, and Ron Paul as the best candidate to defeat Barack Obama.
GoVote.com is the nation’s largest political website. GoVote.com commissioned the national firm, September Inc. to conduct the twenty-two questions survey from January 14 - 17. It included responses from 644 attendees from the 2008 Clark County, Nevada GOP Presidential Caucuses.
